Instructor Gary Thorne runs classes in Oxford covering kickboxing, fitness and MMA.

What got you started in martial arts?

GT: Seeing Kung-Fu films in particular Jackie Chan films like Police Story and Drunken Master i decided I had to learn martial arts.

What motivated you to stick with it and get to Black Belt?

GT: I never thought that far ahead, I enjoyed training with the other guys in class and learning new techniques and before I knew it was looking at taking my black belt.

What motivates you to carry on instructing?

GT: It’s amazing seeing different people take different things away from martial arts; the physical aspects are more obvious fitness, coordination martial arts techniques etc. but it’s great seeing students build discipline, respect and self-confidence.

What martial art are you most interested in learning more about?

GT: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I keep finding new techniques and that astounded me.

What traits inspire you the most in a sportsman?

GT: When someone hits a low point –they suffer a loss or an injury but bounce back and train harder that’s always great to see and inspiring.

What inspires you in your fellow instructors?

GT: All my fellow instructors were / are my instructors, sometimes I sit next to those guys and think to myself how did I get here? But I realise they have taught me so much and they have taught me to strive to do my best, that’s why I’m there and that’s why I keep pushing things forward with them.

What inspiration do you draw from your students?

GT: I get so much respect for students that push that bit extra, when they struggle to train but find a way or when they really push themselves and up their training before a grading or a fight.

What aspect of martial arts training do you enjoy the most?

GT: learning new techniques, understanding there potential applications and seeing how different people use them adapt them or choose not to use them.

What would you say is your greatest personal strength?

GT: Tolerance and respect.

How would you hope your students would describe you?

GT: Fun, a good technical teacher, and doesn’t take himself too seriously.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not training?

GT: Time with my family is really important to me.

If you could impart one lesson to your students what would it be?

GT: Always try – Don’t look back and regret not giving it a go.

How do you construct and sequence training sessions throughout the year?

GT: Rather than trying to cover a little of everything in every class I tailor each class with a specific aim: Cardio, Kickboxing syllabus, MMA, Self Defence, and Sparring. These class themes cycle round except in a build-up to an event like a grading where I will focus on that event.

What advice would you give a student training for a higher grade?

GT: push yourself, remember each grade gets bigger and tougher and you will need to do more than just the training you do in class. Also speak to your instructor they will always give you help and advice on improving and pushing your training.

What advice would you give a student who had just achieved a black belt and was wondering where to go next?

GT: Set yourself a goal to keep focused, it can be your 2nd Dan/ competing/ expanding into other martial arts or looking at teaching and helping other students try not to get complacent and stay hungry to move forward.

What advice would you give a student struggling to push themselves and commit to training?

GT: Change things up in some way, everybody needs a change or a refresh every now and then, speak to your instructor to see what they can suggest or see what other training opportunities are available.

What kind of fitness training have you personally found to be the most effective?

GT: Its having that goal, if you set yourself an event – a fight, a competition, a belt grading having that deadline to make yourself improve by pushes you to go a little bit harder than your normal level of training and makes a huge difference.

What fitness training do you think the majority of your students would benefit from?

GT: It’s hard to say, different students are at different levels and push themselves in different ways, I don’t think there is one answer but students shouldn’t be afraid to talk to their instructor they will always advise where they think they should individually improve.

What aspect of fitness are you interested in learning more about?

GT: I really like the MMA and Caveman circuits – really dynamic circuit stations

Jenny Shaw is a 2nd Dan blackbelt at  Genesis in Aylesbury. As part of the requirements to achieve her 2nd Dan, Jenny conducted a series of interviews and produced some interesting articles on martial arts and fitness. This her interview with Instructor Fitzroy connor.

Senior Instructor Fitzroy Connor runs classes in the Slough area of Langley, Stoke Poges covering Kickboxing, Kung Fu, and general fitness.

I asked him 20 questions to find out what keeps him going and what words of wisdom he has for his students.

What got you started in martial arts?

FC: Most of my cousins started training in Lau Guar Kung Fu so I started also

What motivated you to stick with it and get to Black Belt?

FC: I had been training for many years and then stopped for about 3 years, when I returned to training most of the people I had trained with had become Black Belts and this got me thinking. The main reason I took my Black Belt was a guy called Mark Kukla who helped me get back into my training and said if he taking his Black Belt then so must I.

What motivates you to carry on instructing?

FC: I love teaching and passing on the knowledge I have gained. See a student progress in all areas of their training gives me great satisfaction

What martial art are you most interested in learning more about?

FC: All martial arts interest me because they all have something I can take away and use in class.

What traits inspire you the most in a sportsman?

FC: The person that gives up their family and life style to become the best they can in their chosen sport.

What inspires you in your fellow instructors?

FC: All the instructors have things that can teach me and look for new ways to make things better for their students.

What inspiration do you draw from your students?

FC: I try and work of the energy and this drives me to become and better instructor.

What aspect of martial arts training do you enjoy the most?

FC: It has to be teaching without a doubt.

What would you say is your greatest personal strength?

FC: Being able to work with students and build their confidence.

What would you like to be remembered for?

FC: Leaving students at Black Belt level that can pass on what I have taught them.

How would you hope your students would describe you?

FC: Strict but fare, approachable and have their needs in mind to help them develop as a martial artist.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not training?

FC: Spending quality time with the wife as I teach 3 days a weeks.

If you could impart one lesson to your students what would it be?

FC: Be the best you can be and work on your weaknesses.

How do you construct and sequence training sessions throughout the year?

FC: I start the year trying to set goals with my students of what they want to achieve and then through the year check that I am helping them meet their goals.

What advice would you give a student training for a higher grade?

FC: Get back to basics – make sure the basic techniques are sound. Move around to different classes and gain different hints and tips for all the Genesis Instructor team

What advice would you give a student who had just achieved a black belt and was wondering where to go next?

FC: I would say take the first year to develop any area they feel they could improve on and then maybe start learning another discipline to increase their knowledge of Martial Arts.

What advice would you give a student struggling to push themselves and commit to training?

FC: Depending on the person I would say take a break and then when you feel that you have the drive back to train comeback doing 1 class then increasing it once you have the love back.

What kind of fitness training have you personally found to be the most effective?

FC: Just martial arts training really it cover most areas in the fitness arena.

What fitness training do you think the majority of your students would benefit from?

FC: I feel the students would benefit from working on strengthening fitness this will enable them to do more explosive types of techniques for longer periods.

What aspect of fitness are you interested in learning more about?

FC: I like all aspects of fitness and this helps me when teaching my students.

If you want to train with Fitzroy then his classes are listed below.

Hi Everybody,

Genesis Martial Arts would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and thank you for all your hard work and support this year.

Attached is a list of Christmas closing dates for your information and the 2014 calendar including all grading dates. Christmas Closing dates 2013 and Genesis Calendar 2014

If you attended the Genesis Fun Day and awards at the weekend you will have seen the limited edition hats for sale. Both are just £6.50 and there is a choice of a fold over beanie hat (left) or fashion fit hat (right). Sorry but the big head in the centre is not for sale.

For all other items see our catalogue. Genesis 2013 Catalogue To place an order, please complete the order form on the last page of the catalogue and forward it to your Instructor. Order by Wednesday 11th December to guarantee delivery before Christmas.

At Genesis we strive to constantly improve standards. As of next year there will be a change to the way students grade for their brown belt white stripe. At present students are required to attend and pass 3 tag grading courses before they are considered ready to take their black belt grading. This will now be the case for any students wishing to take their brown belt with a white stripe. We believe this will raise the level of brown and white stripe students and aid them in understanding what is required to bridge the gap to black belt. There are 4 courses in total.

Finally this year was good, but next year we strive to improve. Check out some of our achievements this year!

New 2nd Dan Black Belts
New Black belts

Many people start up martial arts practice for a variety of reasons including self defence, fitness or just to try something different. Some keep up regular attendance training weekly only to see those weeks turn into months and years. Over this period of time students can look back and see their growth both technically and physically as the fruits of their hard work begin to blossom into the development of a black belt practitioner.

There are many that begin the unknown journey but do not make the destination because on their travels they encounter numerous challenges that are either too uncomfortable for them, or maybe too time consuming and other life tasks take priority. This is normal because as humans we tend to get bored quickly we’re all inquisitive about new things and when things get tough we are hard wired to take the least path of resistance. However, there are a few people who after a period of training decide that the black belt journey is a great one that although challenging, and sometimes uncomfortable, is a worthwhile commitment that has helped develop character as well as an opportunity to learn about who they really are. Genesis would like to invite you all to attend our annual end of year presentation awards night to congratulate all of the hardworking students receive their well deserved black belt grades. We will also be recognising many other students who have shown promise in their training and have been chosen as student of the year from their club by their instructor.
